Background Story

During his last two cycles, 0 has begun to develop and retain certain personality aspects, which disturb those who look for such things. Like most warforged of this era, he understands the world through binary relationships of hierarchy and category (slave | owner; senior | junior; civilian | military; technological | organic etc).

However, 0 has also started to exhibit unusually idiosyncratic behavior - such as cultivating honorable rivalries with enemy aces, trying to advise and assist other officers (both warforged and human) on his own initiative, and showing interest in religious and philosophical matters.

0's commanding officers are worried that the old warforged's unpredictable behavior may escalate into more volatile and potentially dangerous actions in the future, and have thus sent him for reformatting.

Concept and Themes
Spoiler:
As a post-human who is better than his creators by design, as well as a pragmatist due to his purpose as a war machine, 0 is eminently practical with regards to philosophical questions of truth and the soul. He has recently taken an interest into metaphysical and religious matters; he seeks enlightenment amidst the thrills and spills of high-speed combat in this dark age.

Rapid-fire pulses of information speed and whizz through his circuits like adrenaline and blood would in a human body; in the midst of conflict and chaos, 0 gains numerous insights into the nature of reality, and has observed that his human creators are self-contradictory beings who possess an extraordinary talent for self-deception, which can both hinder and aids them in its dual functions as 'delusion' and 'faith'.

0 is fascinated by these attitudes and practices of his makers, and he thus seeks to understand how they allow the humans to shape, construct, and transform reality. He thus attempts to emulate this by crafting his own system of belief and meaning for his artificial existence through his actions and experiences.

From a role-playing perspective, 0 is probably the thematic anti-thesis of Mordenkrag. Where the goliath warrior is the pre-human 'appointed king of the earth' from the primordial age, 0 is the post-human 'inheritor of the earth' heralding the age yet to come. Where the goliath primal champion is about how things were, how things remain, this warforged newtype is about how things will be, and how things will change.

Background Story

Rufus was born into a tribe of warmongering barbarians who called themselves the Kal'khans. This was located between the southern border of empire of Sigmar to the north, and the lands of Ymir to the south. As with the rest of the village boys, he grew up learning how to hunt and fight from a very young age. Each win in contests of strength and survival only made him more confident in his abilities as a warrior. Rufus grew up to be a proud teenager who could even hold his own against the seasoned warriors of the tribe.

In his 16th year, the scouts of the army of the empire discovered the Kal'khan village. Noting in the scout reports that the men were especially strong and warlike, the army commander issued a decree to take in protection the tribe and their lands as part of the empire. However, the men and children who were capable of fighting were to serve as soldiers for 6 years in the war. These soldiers were allowed to form their own unit with an appointed commander from the army.

Rufus was initially rebellious(and paid for it), especially during the stage of training as a unit. However, when he faced off with his first enemy, it felt like he found his calling in life. The glory of battle and the revelry of taking the lives of others as he himself stood as the last. It left him with a feeling far beyond what he thought was pride at winning a simple contest. Quickly, he established a reputation for spelling doom on all enemies that stood before him. As the alpha of his unit, he was accorded special favors and privileges, all as long as he bent the knee to his commander. After his first 6 years, he took his bounty and went back to his commander with a request to extend for another 6. And another.

At the age of 34, he has never risen above the rank of sergeant. Even the rank was honorific. Rufus was never allowed to lead men into battle as he has shown no regard for those placed under his command. After 18 years of bloody conflict, he was tired. As a final duty to the commander who has shown him so much favor, he agreed to finish the last year of his service before he would take to the hills and go back to his homeland.

Goram hates giants. He really, really hates them.

On the day of his sister's wedding to an Imperial lord, a war-band of fire giants and their bandit lackeys attacked his home and indulged themselves in the slaughter of many of his loved ones. Goram lost his beloved wife and children that day, and his sister was slain as well.

The fire giants' raid left the young lord with only one hand; he lost his right hand to the flames of the battlefield while trying to save his family. His mind was also seared by this experience; swearing dark, bitter oaths of fury and pain, the maimed prince walked into the deepest, most barren wastes of the desert, hunting and slaying giants and brigands alike with grim, relentless dedication.

Goram is dedicated to surpassing the giant race; his unarmed fighting style depends not so much on skill and technical mastery, but rather more on raw athleticism, instincts, and bloodlust. He developed his own battle techniques as he honed his anger and grieved his loss. The wild spirits of the mountains and the seas heard the cries of his soul, and lent their might to his cause.

The warrior's bold actions and many achievements garnered the attention of a legendary and powerful mystic, Altan of the Blood Moon, a wise warrior blessed by the goddess Melora. Altan watched Goram from a distance, and secretly tested his might and his virtue, as he sought to guide and temper the prince's berserk rage into a source of deep inner strength.

As time passed, Altan revealed himself to Goram, and offered to teach him the arts of statecraft and war, and also presented him with an intricate clockwork gauntlet to replace his missing hand. Under the Blood Moon's tutelage, Goram has managed to refine his fighting techniques, and now the prince leaps into combat with a ferocious grace that few have ever witnessed before.

Confident, enterprising, a little melancholic at times, kind to children and polite to women, proud and vengeful to a fault. Enjoys singing, dancing, good food and drink, and the odd brawl or ten, but is capable of surprising civility and manners if the situation calls for it.

Random Trivia
Spoiler:

Goram's most prized possesion is a classical poem copied on a crumpled and half-burned piece of parchment. The penmanship is frankly rather shoddy; the quality of the parchment is poor, and the clumsiness of the scribe is evident in the sloppiness of the brushwork. Goram never shows this parchment to anybody, and he keeps it safely hidden in an amulet around his neck.
